DEER VALLEY SKI HOUSE
The alpine terrain and extreme weather conditions of Deer Valley, Utah, provided the material and strategic framework from which to design this vacation house at 9,000 feet above sea level. Local weathering materials and indigenous landscaping offered a means to mitigate environmental impact and economize on construction and maintenance, while also firmly situating the house in its mountainous surroundings. Dry set local stone serves as the house’s material base, reclaimed timber siding reclaimed from a nearby abandoned rail trestle clads the façade, and a green roof covering much of the first floor is planted with native species. Variation between the house’s rootedness and openness permits a seamless transition between the harsh winters and temperate summers of its environment.
